Dear BOMA Detroit member:

As you may know, we are bolstering the efforts of the BOMA Detroit Government Affairs Committee through increased information to our membership on issues that could impact BOMA Michigan Members. Please be on the lookout for BOMA Alerts! from us or our lobbyists. We will also provide other routine communications to our membership, including a memo from the chair.

We will be asking you in the weeks and months to come to endorse letters, e-mails, and other communications supporting BOMA positions on issues such as taxes, and forward them to your representatives in Lansing and Washington, D.C. to let them know our position and call to action.

In the world of politics, an informed, engaged constituency can be a very powerful force. The BOMA Government Affairs Committee will do everything we can to protect the rights and property of BOMA members as lawmakers seek to raise revenues through new taxes or the subtle “tweaking” of existing tax laws. If you haven’t done so, please review our website for additional information on our Government Affairs efforts. Our advocacy days, information sharing, letters and communications campaign are important. But these efforts are not enough to get the job done.

It has been said that money is the lifeblood of politics. We all know how expensive political campaigns are and it is a fact of life that contributors get access to decision-makers more readily than those who do not have the ability to contribute money. Just having money in an account known as a Political Action Committee (PAC) fund gives us weight with lawmakers.

We have established the BOMA Michigan PAC in order to raise funds to make us a more serious player in Lansing and elsewhere. Our goal is to have 1005 membership participation in an annual contribution, so we’ll be looking for small contributions from everyone. How the money will be spent will be based on your input, recommendations from our Government Affairs Committee, and our professional lobbyists. The final decisions will be made by our Board of Directors.

We envision contributing to those lawmakers and issues that support BOMA’s interests while withholding support from those opposing BOMA. We’re a long way from using money we don’t yet have. Please let me spend a few minutes explaining the BOMA Michigan PAC and how you can contribute.

The BOMA Michigan PAC is set up as a state-registered Independent PAC. As such, the PAC is governed by the election laws of Michigan as administered through the Secretary of State Bureau of Elections. The advantages of an Independent PAC are that the entity can accept unlimited amounts of money from an individual and can give up to 10 times the personal contribution limits to a state officeholder. For instance, the personal limit for an individual to give to a State Representative is $500. An independent PAC can give up to $5000 to that individual.

For contribution purposes, a state independent PAC CANNOT accept any corporate cash. Again, no corporate checks. Here’s what we CAN accept:

  • Money from an individual (known as hard money)
  • Money from another state PAC, or from an LLC (Limited Liability Company) as long as an accompanying letter explains which of the partners should be credited with the contribution.
The PAC must keep a record of an individual's name and address. However, if the person contributes more than $100 in any calendar year, the PAC must also gather their business address and occupation.

We’ll also be hosting some fundraising events in the near future with prizes such as TVs, electronic equipment and trips. I promise you it will be fun to support your BOMA Michigan PAC!

We will be distributing BOMA Michigan PAC donation cards to accompany your personal donation. The PAC Cards will explain what you can contribute and how to contribute. The easiest thing to remember is we can accept cash or personal checks. We look forward to your support and participation in BOMA’s political activities.

Sincerely,

John Sier, Esq.
